Can you believe it's August 1st already?! I'm happy to finally have a finish to share this week.
I wasn't sure what to do with the quilting since all I am able to do yet is straight lines. I should have listened to my first thought and just done diagonal quilting both directions. Instead I did diagonal in the white. I then quilted on both inside edges of the color parts of the diamond shapes. I continued on into the white crosses. This is where it got a little off. I'm disappointed with it because it isn't even, not by a long shot.
For the back I used my two favorite prints from this fabric line, Tule by Leah Duncan for
Art Gallery. The white is Art Gallery Pure Elements in Snow.
I really dislike piecing backings, although I love how they look. I'm happy with how this one turned out. The quilting blended so well into the fabric that you can't see it very good but it ended up with lots of different designs I wasn't expecting. But it's a good unexpected since I'm less than thrilled with the quilting on the front!
For the binding I used the zig zag dot print. After it was finished, it ended up as just dots but I love that it left the softness of the quilt. My husband informed me that if there were any farm ladies reading this, they were gonna know this binding picture was taken in a patch of weeds with flowers. When you live in NM, you take any flowers you can get, even if they are in the weeds, ha!
I wasn't sure I was going to like the end result on this one because of the quilting quirks. The fabric is so pretty that I still like it :) It finished at 52 x 69. Pieced and quilted with Gutermann white cotton. The batting is off my big roll of 100% cotton.
If you are interested in making your own, here's the diagram I drew up when starting. They are all 4 inch squares in a 15 x 20 layout. When I pieced this together I did it in 5 x 5 sections because I don't enjoy sewing long rows together. I have better luck keeping things square this way.

ReplyDeleteI think the "weeds" are a perfectly lovely backdrop. I always leave the weeds that have pretty flowers. I just think of them a"bonus" plants. Your quilt is lovely. Most of the time, only we see our own imperfections. Your quilting is good, I love the diagonal, and fabric choices are perfect!!

DeleteCongratulations on a lovely finish! I really like your backing. Sometimes when I get to the backing phase I am just ready for a project to be over, so I can understand not being in love with piecing backings together. I think the binding choice is great. From a distance it looks like stripes, and I really like the detail of the dots up close.
ReplyDeleteI think it's great! I don't see anything wrong with the front quilting and I love the lines on the white. I always hate figuring out the backs too. It's probably why I have a bunch of quilt tops laying around. :)

ReplyDeleteI think it is great! My straight line quilting is never perfect - so I just went with it. I usually make them different distances apart to give myself a little room of error/breathing. :)

ReplyDeleteI'm stuck in the land of straight-line quilting, too. I like what you decided to do here -- it adds to the geometry of your design. I don't know about you, but I'm getting close to trying FMQ. I need more options!
